I started a podcast

The debut episode is about “Peter Piper” by Run-DMC. This episode and the next couple will be free; then I’ll contemplate instituting a paywall.

I did a lot of meticulous editing to line up my talking with the music I’m talking about, and it was a labor-intensive process. I wonder whether people will notice or care about this, or whether I should just talk how I talk. I’m interested to hear your opinions. I’m also open to suggestions and ideas: what would you like to hear me talk about? Do you prefer short and punchy episodes or do you want me to stretch out? Do you like tight scripting or stream of consciousness? Let me know.

  1. I’m on Team Tight Script and Editing, Ethan. This episode is fantastic, and one of the reasons I enjoyed it so much is the experience of hearing you say words while the musical counterpart is happening at the same time, or immediately adjacent. I have ADHD and get bored with podcasts nearly all the time. That didn’t happen with this episode. Your approach builds trust with me, the listener, that you’ll keep things moving. At the same time, what you have to say dives deep into details, which is also essential for me (and I think for most listeners).

That said, I can’t imagine how much time it takes to produce what you made. I would vote for an occasional episode like this rather than a weekly loosey-goosey one. :)

  2. Thanks for the episode! I liked the editing and how the music being discussed played when it was being talked about, but I imagine it’s a ton of work to make that happen.

  3. I freestyle just fine, but as a listener I much prefer tight scripting and editing to freestyling. Maybe I should let go a bit more, though.

  4. i enjoyed it, but it seems like it would be a lot of work. you’re a very good writer; how are you at freestyling? Some people just can’t, but if you do it as well as you write – that is, with the same facility, NOT to the same level – and it saves you time, do that. i completely agree on the skill of sampling; imagine trying to write a story that way that didn’t come across as pastiche? i think that’s an interesting question, how a piece of music establishes it’s own coherence.
